Hello,

Is the answer not meant to be ±1/125 ?

I'd of thought that taking square root of 25 will give ±5 and then putting that to the power of -3 would give ±1/125?

I found this rule in my textbook, which I've never seen in my life lol (And I finished A-Level Maths last year).

Still kinda confused about the rule.

if a^1/2 = √a

and we only take the positive root, why don't we do this if it's the other way round?

i.e. if √a = a^1/2, why do we take both the positive and negative roots if its basically the same thing as above?

@zak-amin

I wont lie I never knew that

so basically √a^2 = +-a

and (a^2)^1/2 = only +a

Loool

I did a bit of research and basically it looks like to the power of half means "the principal square root", i.e. it should only give positive numbers

So that solution that you just posted which contradicts that, I reckon the worker from edexcel that wrote the solution didn't know about that
