If you pretend the lengths outside the square are just "1m", the diagonal inside the square will be root 2 metres (due to pythagoras' theorem).

So making a ratio out of this:

Maria : Simon

Root 2 : 4

If you want it in its simplest form, divide both sides by root 2 and you get

1 : 4/root 2

= 1 : 2 x root 2

@tye

That wasn't the answer on the markscheme though.

speed = distance/time

Assume that the length of the square is 1m and Maria and Simon both took 1 second to travel their respective distances.

Maria's speed = (root 2)/1 = root 2

Simon's speed = 4/1 = 4

Initial ratio = root 2:4

The question asks us to give the ratio in the form of n:1.

Just divide both sides by 4 to get (what should be) the answer:

(root 2)/4:1

@zak

You can rationalise that root 2 /4 as well
